英文E-mail寫作的7C原則

在利用 E-mail 傳達訊息時，並不要求您使用華麗優美的詞句；您需要做的就是用「簡單、樸實的語言，清晰、準確、完整地表達自己的意思」，讓對方可以非常清楚的瞭解您想傳達的訊息。以下就介紹寫好英文 E-mail 需要掌握的「7C 原則」：




1. Conciseness 簡潔
優秀的英文書信應該行文流暢、言簡意賅、避免冗長。也就是說，寫信者必須使用簡短量少的文字表達必要的資訊。請對比下面的句子：
╳ Company operations for the preceding accounting period terminated with a substantial deficit.（公司再操作的營運上做出了許多錯誤的決定因此損失了一些利潤。）→too complicated
○ The company lost much money last year.（公司去年損失了許多錢。）→more concise


2. Concreteness 具體
英文書信書寫過程中，一般會涉及一些情況的描述，比如時間、地點、價格、貨品編號……等等，發文者應盡可能做到具體的描述，這樣會使交流的內容更加清楚，並且更加有助於加快事務的進程。請對比下面的句子：
╳ These brakes can stop a car within a short distance.（這像煞車系統可以在短距離內使一台車停下來。）→general
○ These Goodson power brakes can stop a 2-ton car within 24 feet.（古森煞車系統可以再24呎內史一台兩頓重的車停下。）→concrete and attractive


3. Clearness 清晰
清晰是英文書信寫作最重要的原則。一封含糊不清、詞不達意的書信會引起誤會與歧義，甚至會造成貿易損失。清楚表達應注意選擇正確、簡練的詞以及正確的句子結構。一般地，商務文書的撰寫者必須將自己的意思清晰地表達出來,以便對方準確理解。請對比下面的句子：
╳ We can supply 50 tons of the item only.（我們只能提供五十頓商品。）→focus on the item
○ We can supply only 50 tons of the item.（我們能夠提供五十頓這樣的商品）→focus on the quantity


4. Courtesy 禮貌
書信交往，同樣需要以禮待人，因而在寫信過程中，要避免傷害對方感情的表達。措辭上多選用些禮貌、委婉的詞語，像 would, could, may, please, thank you 等。當然這並不意味著一味地低三下四。請對比下面的句子：
╳ We are sorry that you misunderstood me.（我們很遺憾你對我們的誤解。）→put the blame on you
○ We are sorry that we didn’t make ourselves clear.（我們很抱歉沒把我們的論述表達清楚。）→put the blame on self


5. Consideration 體貼
在英文書信寫作過程中，寫信者應設身處地地想到對方，尊重對方的風俗習慣，即採取所謂的」You-Attitude」（「對方態度」），盡可能地避免使用 」I-Attitude」 或「We-Attitude」（我方態度）。另外，還應該考慮到收信者的文化程度、性別等方面的因素。請對比下面的句子：
╳ I received your letter of June 23, 2008 this morning.（我於 2008 年 6 月 23 日早上收到了您的信。）→I-Attitude
○ Your letter of June 23, 2008 arrived this morning.（您的信件已於 2008 年 6 月 23 日早上送達。）→You-Attitude


6. Correctness 正確
英文書信中，除了避免語法、拼寫、標點錯誤外，其所引用的史料、資料等也應準確無誤。尤其在商務英語中提到具體日期、資料等內容時更要準確表達以免發生歧義。請對比下面的句子：
╳ This contract will come into effect from Oct.1.（這份合約將於 10 月 1 日起生效。）→ambiguous
○This contract will come into effect from and including October 1, 2008.（這份合約將於 2008年 10 月 1 日當日開始生效。）→accurate


7. Completeness 完整
在英文書信寫作中，資訊的完整性很關鍵，所以商務信函中應包括所有必需的資訊。例如下述通知，短短的幾句話就包含了應有的全部資訊：

All the staffs of Accounts Department are requested to be ready to attend the meeting in the conference room on Tuesday, at 3:00 p.m., Jan. 6, 2008, to discuss the financial statement of last year.

If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen, by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different, that their voices could be that difference.

1.尋問餐廳

到國外遊玩，品嘗當地美食是行程重頭戲之一，然而，身為異鄉人 ，自然
無法知道每家餐廳口碑如何。此時，不妨向飯店中的服務人員詢問 ，說出
自己的喜好及需求，請對方做最佳建議。

享受異國美食是出國旅遊的樂趣之一，若已打聽好何處有美味，不妨在

且最好詢問清楚是否需著正式服裝，以免屆時失禮。

味醬，自己調味一番，倒也挺入口的。用完餐付費時，千萬別忘了確

出國旅遊時，到當地人常去的平價快餐店用餐，可能是多數旅行者最便 利而省錢的選擇，
到此類餐廳用餐，氣氛雖輕鬆，不像到高級餐廳進食時要講究太多餐桌 禮儀，但對於個人
的需求，最好在點餐時便向櫃檯說明清楚。例如若需外食 ，或不喜歡某些醬料皆須事先告
知，以免徒增服務人員的麻煩，浪費自己時間。

分析英文聽力不佳的可能性

由於自己真的是滿喜歡英文的，平日也愛念英文，對於自己及大家的聽 力問題，有以下心得想分享一下：
一、單字量及片語、慣用語不足夠：這是最基本的，所以聽力到頭或多 或少也是需要閱讀來增進，
單字量不足或片語記得少，想當然爾，一定會聽不懂 ，所以單單一直看新聞CNN或ICRT但不重閱讀的話可能還是會進步，
但可能很有量，而且可能會很快就失去了學習動力！
二、學習工具太過簡單：也就是常常只聽自己聽得懂的教材 ，如聽得懂大家說英語等比較EASY，
說得比較慢的教材，當然感覺很有成就感，但實質上是幫助是很有限的 ，只一遇到說得快的時候，
就馬上原形畢露，產生聽力障礙！
三、環境：當然這比較難解決，畢竟不是每個人都有實力(金錢或時間)到國外深造或居住，
因此長期聽台式的英文，其實是或多或少跟真正的美式是有落差的 ！建議還是多看看外語片來增加這方面的不足！
四、連音的熟悉不足：由於不習慣連音，因此常常在看美語片時 ，有產生很多疑惑或困擾，
一部分原因大概是因為連音的部分不夠熟稔的關係，這部分可得靠自己 多加強這方面的進修，
部分雜誌也有在此方面做著墨。
五、太少開口說：個人覺得說與聽某些程度是相輔相成的 ，除了聽以外也要多說，
揣模學習老外的發音腔調與口音，不僅能添加學習樂趣也能大大增進自 己的口說與聽力！

小弟也是對英文有興趣，但是聽力部分實在很弱，雖然在美國待過半年 的時間。我相當認同上面這位仁兄的分析，也是很值得大家去檢討的重 點。

談英語俚語

在中文報章雜誌上，常看到一些英語俚語（口語）的中文翻譯。諸如 「黑羊」、「踢水
桶」、「阿奇�斯之踝」等等。其實這些譯文都是來自英語 「black sheep」、「kick
the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。

若是這些譯文不附加原文予以解釋，恐怕「迷惑」的讀者，不在少數 。這不是影響了語
文的溝通目的嗎？為此，介紹一些這類的英語俚語（在此稱之為 「特別字眼」），也許
對某些讀者會有點助益！

（1） empty suit：

指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商業上，當
名詞用。

（這本是business term，指雖然穿著整齊全套的 business suit，卻不能幹、沒有能
力，不受尊敬的人。）

例如：

An empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.

（一位虛偽不實的人，通常不會受到大眾的注意。）

Mr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.

（李先生裝著像位大人物，但他只是不重要的人。）

雖然這句話，多半只用單數，但有時也用複數：

The company is filled with a lot of empty suits.

（這公司有許多虛偽不重要的人）

（2） fair-haired boy：

指得寵的人，也就是寵兒，多半指男人（a fa-vorite person usually referring to
a man）

（通常用單數，當名詞用）

例如：

Mr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.

( Cheney 先生變成總統的寵兒。)

Not being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.

（王先生不得寵，從未得到加薪和升級。）

有時也可用複數：

Mr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.

（Bush 先生為他的內閣選用兩位過去的寵兒。）

Fair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.

（得寵的人，較會受到他們上司的特別待遇。）

（但沒有 fair-haired girl 的說法）

（3） fishing expedition：

為了搜羅新聞材料而進行盤問或調查（Try to ask questions to get more useful
information）

（這句話本是 legal term，當名詞用，多半用單數）

例如：

The judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.

（法官說原告為搜羅罪證而進行調查，要他停止。）

The police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve（或 resolve）the
murder case.

（員警進行調查盤問，以便偵破謀殺案。）

（注：solve 和 resolve 都有「解決」的意思，但通常solve用在「問題上」，
resolve 用在「爭執」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict）

The reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement
in the Iraq War.

（記者搜羅有關總統捲入伊拉克戰爭的新聞資料。）

偶爾也有人用複數：

Several fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for
office.

（在他決定競選之前，他做了數次的收集資料調查。）

（4） filthy rich：

意思是很富有，很有錢。（very wealthy）

（未必是不義之財或骯護@@�^

多半當形容詞用。例如：

With a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.

( B先生住著富麗堂皇的大廈，開著昂貴的汽車，他一定很有錢。)

Despite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.

（儘管 C 先生很富有，他仍然過著簡樸的生活。）

A filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.（有
錢者對他人有優越感的傾向。）

Filthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess
noble characters.

（有錢人未必受人尊敬，除非有高尚的品格。）

（注：但沒有 cleanly rich 的說法）

（5） fairy godmother：

指及時慷慨提供幫助的人（someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance
）

（多半指有錢的女人）

（這是來自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power；因為童話故事�沒有男人，故不
說 fairy godfather。當名詞用。可參考 [url]http://www.eslbay.com[/url] �面的
"Idioms"）

例如：

Mr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.

（一位有錢的女人，幫助A先生五萬元。）

After lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity
organization like a fairy godmother.

（B 太太將一生的積蓄全部捐給慈善機構。）

有時也用複數：

Only business women can act as fairy godmothers.

（只有商場上的女人才能提供金錢幫助他人。）

In Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered.

（在中國社會�，很少有錢的女人慷慨捐助。）

(6）eye opener：

指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的發現。也就是驚人的新發現或啟 示（shocking
news or revela-tion）

（當名詞用；通常只用單數）

例如：

Your wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many
youngsters.

（你那篇有關婚姻的好文章，使許多年輕人獲得啟示。）

Mr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.

（王先生的中美政策講演使人恍然大悟。）

The popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese
immigrants.

（大名鼎鼎的世界日報是北美許多中國移民驚喜的新發現。）

Some American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many
Chinese people.

（美國一些的風俗習慣和想法，讓許多老中感到驚奇。）

（7） hot dog：

指喜歡賣弄冒險的舉動，或愛出鋒頭的驚險動作。（one who performs showy or
dangerous stunts ; a show off） ( 可當名詞或動詞用)

例如：

Some young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.

（一些年輕人開車時，常做些超速的驚險動作。）

（這�的 hot dogs = hot doggers）

In front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.

（在女友面前，年輕人做出一些賣弄技巧的花招。）

（動詞時態是：hot dogged, hot dogging）

1. At the beginning of the email

在進入正題前，我們首先要對「觀光旅遊」英語有一個基本認知： 和 「新聞」， 「商務」 等其他英語一樣，它們都是使用同樣26個字母，遵循同樣文法規則， 發音讀法一樣，拼字句型如一， 若有不同，只不過是在字義上(例一：“security”, 安全， “securities”，期貨) 或類型上，(例二： “How are you?” (正式)， “How’s going?” (半正式)， “What’s new?” 或 “What’s happening?” (非正式)， 因領域範圍功能等因素不同而有所差異。所以「如何學」? 就如在學校內學習任何科目一般： 多讀，多聽， 多背，和多用，自然而然就可熟能生巧!

除了上述認知外，我們還要有一個正確觀念，那就是能在「語文」 和「語言」之間做區分。「語言」旨在溝通，所以流利(fluency)與否成為衡量基準；所以精准(accuracy) 則成為評鑒依歸。若就四技來分隔，「聽」 與 「說」應屬前者表現； 「讀」 與 「寫」則是後者重心。但上述區隔絕不代表絕對地分割；能使用語言少不了語文基礎，能欣賞語文又少不得對語言精練使用。所以「如何學」? 答案： 就如同在學校內修習任何科目一樣：多讀，多聽，多背，多用，自然而然就可熟能生巧!

Using Blackberry (機場無線泡網)，pay phone (公共電話)，mail services (郵政服務)，talking to the operator (電話對答)，taking and leaving messages (受話留言), sending and picking up mails, telegrams and messages (寄發收取郵件消息) 等運作。

就像任何表達一樣，觀光英語的使用也不外乎「人」，「事」，「時」「地」，和「物」。當然，別忘了還有「如何」。例如：
人：Who is going to the States with you?
       Whose bags are those?
       Whom are you going to visit while you are in the States?
事：What’s the purpose of your visit here?
                     What are you going to do when you are here?
                     What are the Dos and Don’ts（該做及不該做）while one visits a
      foreign  country?
時：When will the plane take off?
        When will we arrive?
        When is the connecting flight?
地：Where is the bus terminal?
        Where can I find the nearest convenience store?
        Where is the souvenir shop located?
物：What’s the thing crawling over there?
        Which would you prefer? Chicken or beef?
        What is the drink made of/with?
如何：How far is the train station from here?
            How can I get to the Metropolitan Museum?
           Why is that he could play it twice and only once for me?

有了以上的認識，把這些觀念融入從小學到大的基本句型中。例如：
說明句：I am going there with my friends.
              I want to visit some relatives, and friends as well if I have time.
              I have been dreaming of going to the States since I was a kid.
疑問句：How much is that red sweater?
                           Do I have to get a valid passport before I can apply for the visa to
the U.S.?
               Is there any place you would recommend that’s worthy of visiting?
否定句：I don’t think that’s such a good idea to go there alone.
               We have decided not to spend the rest of our trip shopping.
                             I would rather go somewhere else instead of /than just staying
in the   hotel.
命令句：Don’t do anything local people won’t/Do in Rome as Romans do!
                            Leave it there! The janitor will take care of it.
Watch out! You are too close to the cliff!

除了上述這些「耳熟能詳」的句型外，別忘了其他的句子結構：
1 主詞＋完全不及物動詞：

至於字彙片語，我不相信有任何一本涉及觀光旅遊的工具書能夠把所有的內容都包含在內；英語實力的增進是日積月累的結果，速成班或雙語手冊只能應急但絕非正確的方法。當然，基本的字彙片語一定要能掌握。例如：

Good morning/afternoon/evening


向你的朋友打招呼，你也許會說"Hi! How are you?" 在商業裡，無論如何，最適當和某人打招呼會說"Good morning/Good afternoon/Good evening." 記得也要包括別人的姓 "Good morning, Ms. Smith."




How may I help you?


不論你在哪一個領域，在你工作時的大部分時間可能會處理一些請求或提供一些協助。所以當有人過來需要請你幫忙，不論是你的客戶或老闆，你要微笑並且說"How may I help you?"
或者是"What can I do for you?" 要注意不要簡略的說 "What
do you want?"。 這個句子聽起來有點莽撞，特別是當你用錯誤的語調說這句話(在語尾用下降的語調會讓這句話聽起來不禮貌)。


I'm sorry/I will

在工作上，當討論一個新的想法或專案，你需要很有禮貌表達你的想法讓大家知道，或是說明你不同意的地方。使用這個句子"In my
opinion ? 在你的句子的剛開始告訴你的聽眾你仍然接受其他的觀點。假如你不同意某人的看法，你不能說"That's the dumbest idea Ie ever heard!"而是要說， "I'm afraid I don agree."。小心使用你所用的每一個字，這樣才會讓和你一起工作的人更願意聽你說話。

Good morning/afternoon/evening


To greet a friend, you might say, "Hi! How are you?" In business, however, it's more appropriate to greet someone by saying, "Good morning/Good afternoon/Good evening." Include their last name, too: "Good morning, Ms. Smith."




How may I help you?


No matter what field you're in, much of your work probably involves handling requests or providing assistance. So when someone calls or comes to you for help, whether it's a customer or your boss, smile and say, "How may I help you?" or "What can I do for you?" Be careful to not simply say, "What do you want?" This phrase often comes across as rude, especially if spoken with the wrong intonation (a falling tone at the end of the sentence can make it sound impolite).


I'm sorry/I will


When something goes wrong, no one likes to hear excuses. So first apologize, and then take action. If you can't answer a question or meet a request, start with, "I sorry ? It's the best way to defuse a conflict before it starts. For example, if you don't know an answer, say, "I sorry, I don know the answer." But don't stop there! Follow with what you will do: "But I will find out." "I'm sorry" says you care about their concern, and "I will" assures them you'll help.


Would you mind?/Could you?/I'd appreciate.


Unless you're the top dog (the boss), you don't want to sound like you're giving orders. Phrasing requests in question form is much better than issuing a statement. "Would you mind looking at this report?" or "Could you take a look at this?" is more appropriate than, "Look at this report." When you make requests politely your colleagues will be much more likely to happily comply!


In my opinion/I'm afraid I don't agree


In business, when discussing a new idea or project, you need polite ways to get your thoughts across or indicate you don't agree. Using the phrase "In my opinion ? at the beginning of your sentence tells the listener that you're still open to other points of view. If you don't agree with someone, don't say, "That's the dumbest idea Ie ever heard!" Instead use, "I'm afraid I don agree." Choosing your words carefully will make the person youe working with much more willing to listen to you, too!

學好英語的N個要訣

第一要訣：收聽英語氣象報告
　　有些教學錄音帶配合初學者的學習，故意放慢語速，這對英語聽力的訓練是不夠的。如果聽語速正常的英語，初學者又會感到力不從心。英語氣象報告的速度雖快，但辭彙簡單固定，內容單純，重復的可能性大，而且在生活中隨時都可以印證，是聽力入門的好教材。

第二要訣：收聽國際廣播電臺的英語廣播
　　國際廣播電臺每天早上7:00--8:00，中午11:00--12:00各有一小時的英語節目。內容包括國內外新聞，剪報集錦和各類系列的專題報道。除了英語標準流利的國內播音員擔任廣播之外，也有向外僑或訪客就某一話題而做的錄音訪問。內容廣泛，但辭彙較簡單，語速亦適中，可以藉此訓練或增進英語的聽力。

第三要訣：善用錄音帶鍛煉聽說能力
　　有些學習者總是習慣於一邊看書一邊聽磁帶，把磁帶當成閱讀的輔助工具，這樣打不到鍛煉聽力的目的。錄音帶應該是以聽說能力的訓練主。學習者要選用與自己能力相適應的聽力磁帶，不要急於求成，以免生受挫心理。先反復聆聽磁帶內容，起先只要抓住梗概，多聽幾次後，對細節的瞭解便越來越多。聽力較差的人，可先閱讀課文，然後再集中精力領會每段每句的意思。這樣練習有助於培養傾聽時注意力的集中，使您的聽力迅速進步。

第四要訣：聽正常語速的英語，才能加速聽力的進步
　　很多廣播教學和聽力教材總是了配合聽或學習者的程度而故意放慢語速，這雖是無可厚非的變通方法，但也會生一些不良的副作用。例如：1.聽慣了語速放慢的英語，在與外國人的實際交往中，就很難適應，甚至聽不懂他們用正常語速講的英語。2.故意放慢語速時，通常會把一句中每個詞都清楚的讀出來，但在正常的會話中會出現很多同化（assimilation），減弱（reduction），連音（liaision）的現象。所以，聽語速正常的英語對於聽力和會話極重要。

第五要訣：從電視，電影中學習英語
　　看英文電視，電影不僅能瞭解西方人的文化和生活，而且也是學習地道英語和提高英語聽力的好機會。選取的影片最好是以現代生活背景的文藝片或喜劇片。如果您的聽力不錯，要養成不看字幕的習慣。程度稍差的就不要勉強自己，否則英語沒學成反倒破壞了欣賞電影的好心情。這種情況下，您可以先看字幕瞭解劇情（如果是電視節目那就要先錄下來），再重新看一至數遍，您的聽力就可在輕鬆的心情下，隨著您對劇情瞭解的增多而迅速提高。

第六要訣：和朋友表演影片情節
　　在英語學習中，我們經常會與朋友或同學相約用英語交談來提高英語會話能力，但經常感到自己的語言貧乏，所談內容有限。現在不妨試試這種方法：配合前節所講的“從電視，電影中學習英語”，先依據電影情節節選一個或多個片段，個人選定一個角色，然後在影片看熟之後試著把臺詞謄錄成文字並背下來，最後進行排練表演。經常做這種練習，不僅對英語會話和聽力大有好處，而且對語法和寫作也是很好的鍛煉。

第七要訣：朗誦英文詩
　　英語是否流利取決於對節奏的正確掌握。英語是按單詞和句子的重音來分節奏的。英文詩是練習英語節奏的最好材料之一。例如 Worsworth 著名的“The Daffodils”（水仙花）：“I wandered lonely as a cloud/That floats
on high o''er vales and hills...”（我象一片白雲孤獨的遊蕩，飄越過溪谷和群山......）便是典型的弱強節奏。讀熟之後，大聲朗誦，一定獲益非淺。

第八要訣：唱歌學英語
　　比朗誦英文詩更有效的是唱英文歌曲。唱英文歌可以幫您練習發音（pronunciation），語調（intonation）和節奏（rhythm），又可以讓您在很愉快的心情下背會很多單詞和句型，真是一舉數得。所選的英文歌曲最好語言優美，語法正規。起先可以從童謠入手，再漸漸的學唱抒情歌曲。學唱之前先要將歌詞朗讀幾遍再跟著磁帶學唱，唱熟後能背更好。

第九要訣：特別注意英文沒有的發音
　　英語中有些讀音是中文中沒有的，這些也是我們英語學習者最困惑的讀音，例如“th”的發音，發這種音時要特別注意口型的正確。

第十要訣：背誦名人演說詞，找機會複誦出來
　　好的演說在用字遣辭上不但求其優美而且特別注重溝通力和說服力，是練習英語表達的最佳教材。學習者不必將演說詞從頭到尾的背誦，只要選擇自己喜歡的段落或句子來背即可。例如：甘乃迪總統的名言“Ask not
what your country can do for you,ask what you can do for your country.”（不要問你的國家能你做什，要問你能你的國家做什。）這類的妙言嘉句背多了之後，對於說話，寫作都會有不少的幫助。

第十一要訣：用英語繞口令克服發音的缺點
　　繞口令（tongue twisters）常把容易混淆或念錯的音放在一起。但因他們常以歌謠或押韻的形式出現，因此讀熟之後也會覺得順口好聽。所以英語繞口令可以作練習英語發音和會話的輔助教材。

第十二要訣：多記一些幽默笑話，準備隨時應用
　　愛聽笑話是人的天性，在社交場合中隨時的插上幾句笑話，可以使氣氛輕鬆活潑，更容易贏得友誼。使用英語的場合，更可利用笑話來消除自己講話的不自在，增強自己對英語會話能力的信心。
　　聽，講和研究英語笑話的好處還遠不止如此。更重要的是，您可以藉著幽默或笑話中精簡的文字或語言增加對西方國家文化和社會的瞭解。請看下面兩個例子：
1.Teenager:"I''m off to the party."
　（少年：“我要去參加聚會了”。）
Father:"Well,have a good time."
（父親：“祝你玩的高興。”）
Teenager:"Look Dad,don''t tell me what to do!"
（少年：“哎，爸爸，不要告訴我應該做什。”）
諷刺美國一些青少年過於強調獨立自主，不受管束的性格。）
2.The policeman stopped the driver and said,"I''m afraid your wife fell out your car about one kilometer back."
"Thank godness,"said the driver,"I thought I had gone deaf."（警察讓司機停下車來，對他說：“你的妻子從你的車上掉下來恐怕已有 一公里 的路程了”。“感謝上帝”司機說“我還以我已經聾了呢”。）諷刺美 國 太太們的長舌嘮叨。

第十三要訣：聽英語時，口中跟著複誦
　　聽英語演講，看英語電視和電影時，要耳朵一邊聽，口中一邊複誦。這樣既有利於注意力的集中，增進對內容的瞭解，又可同時模仿母語是英語的人們（native speakers）的發音和語調。做這種練習時，如果句子長而複雜難以複誦，不必勉強，可以先從較短或較簡單的句子開始。練習多了，就會養成習慣。另外一種有益的練習是逐句口譯（consecutive interpretation）。把聽到的句子逐一譯成漢語，這對於聽力，正確的理解及反應能力也是很好的鍛煉。

第十四要訣：練習朗讀，好處多多
　　英語學習者往往對朗讀不太重視。事實上朗讀的妙用大矣！1.鍛煉英語的發音，語調與節奏；2.使口腔各發音部位靈活，增進說英語時的流利程度；3.使耳朵增加聽英語的機會，從而提高英語聽力；4.充分應用讀書四到：眼到，口到，耳到，心到——比默讀時更能記住所讀的教材。我們也可以說朗讀是會話的基本練習，沒有朗讀習慣的人是很難學成會話的。

第十五要訣：練習朗讀時要從後面往前推演
　　練習朗讀時，我們有時會覺得很難將一個長句朗讀的流利順口。例如雷根總統第二任就職演說詞：“So we go forward today,a nation still mighty in its youth and powerful in its purpose.”（因此我們今天要前進。我們的民族仍因年輕而有力量，因目標確定而強大。）遇到這種情況，我們建議您從最後的一個單詞讀起，每次向前加一個單詞。例如：“...purpose”“...it''s purpose”“...in it''s purpose”“powerful in its purpose”。這種從後向前推的朗讀聯繫法旨在幫助您把握正確的語調。我們知道，語調的上揚或下降在句尾表現的最明顯。這樣的練習可讓您在每次的朗讀時都能顧及正確的語調。

第十六要訣：朗讀長句時，可在“片語”之間稍做停頓
　　在朗讀中可能出現的另一個問題就是斷句。由於句子長，無法一口氣讀完，往往有急促或斷續的現象，句子被讀的支離破碎，非常不自然。也有人在句中隨意停頓，或停頓的地方不當，自己讀起來極不通順悅耳，聽的人也會覺得不知所云。例如雷根總統第二任就職演說詞：“We must do what we know is right,and do it with all our might.”（我們必須做我們知道是正確的事，而且要全力去做。）決不能讀成“We/must/do what/we/know/is right,/and do/it with all/out might.”
　　長句中有短暫的停頓，藉以調和呼吸，這是自然的現象，但停頓的地方必須恰到好處。通常在：1. 有標點符號的地方；2.片語或思想單元之間。短語，從句等思想單元必須各自成一單位，但它們之間可以短暫停頓。例如：“We must do/what we know is right,/and do it/with all your might.（斜線可以稍做停頓之處）。

第十七要訣：了興趣而閱讀
　　寒窗苦讀式的學習方法不但枯燥無味，而且效果往往不佳。如果是了興趣甚至“消遣”而閱讀的話，一定會趣味盎然，並能在無形之中進步。例如：喜歡爵士樂的人讀起爵士樂方面的英文書刊會比看英文教科書效率高的多。同樣的，喜歡汽車的人看介紹汽車的英文書刊，喜歡烹飪的人看介紹汽車的英文書刊，不僅能滿足自己的愛好，而且又可以提高英語能力，真是一舉兩得。
　　假如沒有特別的興趣，那不妨閱讀故事，小說尤其是偵探小說更能使人全神貫注，而且有一氣呵成之感。這可算是一種愉快的學習方法。

第十八要訣：精讀和泛讀並行
　　精讀的教材不必貪多，最好選擇短小精悍的文章，把裏面的辭彙，語法結構等全部弄清楚，然後大聲朗讀，再加背誦，最後能夠默寫幾遍更好。
　　有一個可以兼顧精讀和泛讀的方法，是從返讀的材料中選擇一些最優美，讀來最順口的句子加以精讀。
　　應該儘量將背誦，默寫過的段落和句子在會話或寫作時應用出來。應用也有助於對他們的理解和記憶。

第十九要訣：閱讀英文報刊雜誌
　　報刊雜誌上登載的最新消息，所用的辭彙也是最現代，最實用的。常常閱讀英文報刊雜誌能夠通過生活化，實用性的學習，迅速提高您的英文能力。
　　現在國內最常見的英文報紙是中國日報（China Daily） 和21世紀英語（21st Century）。如果您抱著增大辭彙量，提高英語閱讀能力的目的看報紙，那就不要局限於您所感興趣的部分。最好通讀報紙的每個欄目和版面。包括新聞，社論甚至廣告等。值得一提的是刊登在報紙上的英文連環畫，它不僅能培養您的幽默感，而且讓您在會心一笑之餘還能瞭解一個國家的文化和社會資訊。英文程度稍差的人可以在閱讀英文報紙之前先看看當天的中文報紙，這對理解英文報紙很有幫助。
　　此外，您還可以借助報紙來提高寫作能力。選取一篇社論（或其中的一段或數段）把它譯成中文，測驗自己對社論理解的精確程度。然後將這篇譯文倒譯回英文，再于原文比較，找出那些在語法和修辭方面有待改進的地方。通過這種練習，您一定會受益非淺。

第二十要訣：暫時忘掉字典
　　我們在閱讀英文小說或報刊時，不免會遇到一些生詞。如果總是停下來查字典會很令人掃興，讀書的興趣也會被消磨掉。因此我們建議您，有時可以暫時忘掉字典。
　　首先，選擇的讀物要與您的英文水平相當，令您感興趣。隨便翻閱數頁，瀏覽一下，如果每頁您可以看懂八成以上，便可認定這本書適合您。
　　其次，在閱讀中遇到生詞，不要急著查字典。先聯繫上下文猜猜看，做到這一點就夠了。等從頭到尾看完之後，再去查字典深入研究。
　　看這類讀物，貴在多讀，速讀。同學或朋友之間不妨相互借閱，即可省錢，又可以養成快速閱讀的習慣。

第二十一要訣：查字典之前，要猜猜看
　　學習一種語言一定要查字典，但一定要講究方法。在這裏先說兩件事：第一：不要盲目的查；第二：不要查的太快；換句話說，在查字典以前要先想一想，甚至猜一猜。
　　很多學習英語的人，在文章中一看到生詞抓起字典就查，結果往往是每個生詞都查過了，卻看不懂整句或整段的意思。假如在查字典以前，先根據上下文的意思猜猜看，再翻開字典，就不會感到無所適從了。例如在（A）句：“Will this small car negotiate that steep hill?”（這輛小汽車能翻過那個陡峭的山丘嗎？）和（B）句：“I''m sorry.Our bank doesn''t negotiate foreign checks.”（對不起，我們銀行不兌現外國支票。）中出現的negotiate，我們不能選取多數字典對它下的第一個定義“交涉”。如果不假思索翻開字典就抄下“交涉”這個定義，這句話就無法看懂了。所以，遇到生詞先不要忙著查字典，應該先結合上下文，前後句，整個段落來推敲它的意思，再查字典證實一下，有時甚至用不著查字典意思就清楚了。這種查字典的方法還有一個好處，由於先經過猜，想的過程，對於這個生詞有了觀察和分析，印象已很深刻，查字典之後就很容易就記住這個詞了。
